July 1st used to be my favorite date on the calendar. It was the day that Red Wings fans used to get to open their free-agency presents not unlike a child on Christmas Day.

Luc RobitailleMarian HossaBrian Rafalski and even Steve Duchesne were all nice gifts that gave Detroit hockeys fan hope for the pending NHL season.

Detroit Sports 105.1 (August 12, 2013 to June 29, 2016)

This Friday it will have been three years to the date that I broke the news that Greater Media was flipping WMGC-105.1 from an Adult Contemporary station to an ESPN affiliated all-sports format and today this website was the first to report that experiment was over.

 

And in between our two exclusives a lot of nonsense went down at the station that many had hoped would give Detroit sports fans an alternative to the corporate, caller-driven, antiseptic and mostly home team cheerleading that was going on down the dial at “The Ticket.”

BREAKING NEWS -- Detroit Sports 105.1 Flipping at 6PM Tonight

I have been advised by a former WMGC employee that he has been directly told by a higher-up at WCSX94.7 that the classic rock station’s sister channel Detroit Sports 105.1 will be flipping formats this evening at 6pm.

 

According to Brandon Knoll, the channel will broadcast some sort of stunt in 49 minutes when the format switches.
